Annette Funicello had just turned 13 years old when Walt Disney, the studio's director of production, spotted her dance in an Fullerton California amateur Swan Lake. The Funicello's Mickey Mouse Club teammates were furious at the time Funicello became part of the cast in season one of the show, without having to audition. Disney was correct when Funicello was The Mickey Mouse Club's most popular performer and appeared as a character in Adventures in Dairyland, her story. Funicello needed to record records to maximize her star potential. Funicello was eventually accustomed to making records and genuinely enjoyed having a working relationship with Camerata who was one of the rare forty-something arrangers of the time who got the basic building blocks of early rock music. Her albums gradually improved starting with the third one, Annette Sings Anka, possibly the first album to consider the music of a rock musician as an actual repertoire. Funicello was the star of Beach Party, one of five films about beach parties which were hugely successful. Most often, the film starred Frankie Avalon, these films are made by AIP but the scripts for every film were personally reviewed and approved by Walt Disney to maintain Annette's clean appearance.
