O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her parents raised her at home in Wheaton (Illinois) and she completed her studies in 1981 at North High School of Wheaton. The model was featured in a few commercials prior to moving from Wheaton, Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady started her career by modeling at Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She debuted on screen in 1988, in the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby. She was then offered a recurring role in ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Also, she guest starred in a variety of shows. She appeared in both independent and made for TV films.
