Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family, it was managed by her mom, grandmother and godparents. As a young girl, Ford was battling obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused through word-related associations. Ford started to become attracted to acting at the age of teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days however, Ford realised that it wasn't the ideal location for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth attempt she was eventually admitted. One of her classmates was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut when she appeared as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1990. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in 1991and appeared on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly at the theater, ultimately being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate gained recognition for her stand-up comedy, which has been added to her resume in 1996.
